Mylo: Mushroom Fashion Magic

Hi Wonderful Friend!

All hail Stella McCartney! You know her. Daughter of Paul, fashion designer and founder of her eponymous line, and vegetarian before pretty much everyone.

Stella has been fighting the good fight of finding earth-friendly alternatives to leather. She is closer now than she has ever been.

Introducing Mylo, the leather alternative made from mycelium, the complex web of roots grown beneath mushrooms. Created by the engineers and scientists at a killer US fiber company, Bolt Threads, Mylo is a natural-feeling leather alternative. Something alternative leathers have a hard time re-creating.

Stella has been the first to create garments from Mylo, check out below.

Just like anything truly new and ground-breaking, Mylo is extremely expensive-in fact no one really knows what these garments would cost-and they are not yet available for purchase. But bags are on the horizon.

Here’s a shot from her latest runway look. Mylo mushroom bag. Will it be in stores? Dunno.

Mylo is created in days by growing mycelium on a combination of sawdust and other bio-organisms. It is strong and, although it doesn’t completely biodegrade, it doesn’t require animals to create and it’s quick to produce.

Lululemon has created this yoga mat of undyed Mylo. Here you can see the texture. It’s similar to that of a marshmallow. Kind of spongy.

A non-synthetic, natural feeling leather alternative is pretty exciting because it bridges that space between a huge divide: You can either have leather and it will bio-degrade eventually, most times, OR you have a synthetic product that doesn’t hurt animals but never leaves the earth.

Mylo could be the key. So keep your ears open and when it hits the market, support it and buy some if you can.

Better, kinder and innovative. When those combine, magic!

Enjoy!
